FROM BETH: We have registered 137 people, convinced people who were going to vote absentee in other states to vote in NC, and have provided information that empowered a voter to register since they had completed probation and parole. Everyone we talk to knows the importance of voting early and voting the whole ballot.
Beth, Mindy, and Robin K. are helping register voters. JOIN US! We start at the Common Market on Wednesdays from 5 to 7:30 and Sundays from 3 to 5:30. On Sunday, 15 volunteers registered 16 people, including new folks from Florida and New York. They were very excited to be swing state voters. So far, Uppities have registered 99 people! This Wednesday and Sunday, the weather looks beautiful. Please come back! We will take an hour, 2 hours whatever you have.Come get trained and deploy with a partner to a high-traffic area then return with completed forms and have Parlour ice cream or a snack! Bring a friend! RSVP to bethssilberman@gmail.com.
SHAPE THE FUTURE. Join Durham and North Carolina Democrats on Sunday, September 15 from 4-5:30 pm EST for an online event. We will hear from physicians (including Amy Bryant MD, who successfully challenged the NC medication abortion law), maternal health experts and NC Legislators about the impact of current laws on patient health and outcome, provider morale, events in the NC Legislature and WHAT WE CAN DO. We will be offering ways to GOTV throughout the call. We must win, or these life threatening bans will be enacted nationwide-- WE ARE NOT GOING BACK!!! The event is free and donations will fund paid Democratic organizers on the ground in Durham and throughout North Carolina. When NC turns blue, we win! You can also help fund abortion care for those unable to afford it, including those traveling to NC from states with even more extreme abortion bans.
POLL GREETERS NEEDED! There are 12 early voting sites, and our goal is to have at least one poll greeter at every site for every hour that those sites are open from October 17 to November 2. Sign up here!
We will provide some basic training (all we're really asking is that you greet voters warmly and hand them a "blue card" with our candidates listed as they go into the voting booth), and we will provide you with the materials you need. You just bring your friendly self!
We are also looking for a couple more people to serve as site co-captains. Specifically, we need two co-captains each at Southern High School and at Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. The job is straightforward - you'll be the contact point for volunteers at that site, be responsible for ensuring the materials box gets from evening volunteers to morning volunteers, and coordinate with HQ if you need more materials. If you live near one of those and would be willing to share in this role, please email Charlotte McGee at cvm@mostlymcgee.com. Please sign up, and share this opportunity with your friends and neighbors!
GOOD NEWS
Kamala Harris’ campaign and the DNC are sending nearly $25 million to support down-ballot Democrats — an earlier investment and far more money than the top of the ticket has sent in past election years.
A poll from The New York Times found that abortion is now the number one election issue for American women under 45 years old, and that it’s nearly tied with the economy as the number one issue for women of all ages in battleground states.
Team Harris-Walz announced that it raised $361 million in August, the largest haul of the 2024 cycle and nearly triple Team Trump’s August fundraising haul. They are also reporting $404 million in cash on hand. Nearly 3 million donors contributed in August alone. 95% of all August donations were under $200, and teachers and nurses remain among the most common donor occupations. Over 60% of all donors in August were women and almost a fifth of donors were registered Republicans or Independents.
OTHER NEWS
The polls are neck and neck. PAY NO ATTENTION. We’ve always known that this was going to be a close race. At the precinct level, this comes down to a handful of voters who we CAN register and CAN motivate to vote for Democrats!
The GOP is already interfering with the election. The GOP-dominated N.C. Court of Appeals ordered that RFK Jr.’s name be removed from the state’s ballots. The move will delay early mail-in voting after more than 2.9 million ballots have been printed.
